"Feb 16. 1862-----Pennington, Hon William, died at Newark, New Jersey, in the 65th year of his age. He was a native of the state: began life as a lawyer, and for some time filled the office of chancellor of the State. In 1837 he was appointed Governor of the State, and served seven terms. In 1858 he represented the fifth New Jersey district in congress, and after a severe contest was chosen as Speaker. In 1860 he was again nominated for Congress but was defeated." 627 |
