| graduate of the first Harvard class of 1642 and the first ordained minister to serve in Setauket. 647 ID: I6448 * Name: Nathaniel BREWSTER 1 * Sex: M * Birth: 1623 in Bristol, England 1 * Death: 18 DEC 1690 in Brookhaven, Long Island 1 * Note: Entered Harvard in 1639, graduated as a bachelor of Theology in 1642. Returned to England, and in 1650/51 became pastor of a church in Alby, Norfolk that had been vacated as a result of the takeover of English church affairs by the Puritans. A letter from Oliver Cromwell to his son-in-law, dated 22 June, 1655, concerning missionary work in Ireland, refers to "A reverend godly Mr. Brewster, hardly known to us otherwise, is ... proceeding thither; with whom the Lord Protector thinks good to salute his Son-in-law." Apparently did missionary work in the Dublin area while retaining his Norfolk pastorate. After the Restoration of King Charles II, and the return to earlier Anglican practices in the Church of England (Act of Uniformity), Brewster returned to America, landing in Boston about September 1663. He was offered a number of pulpits, including New London, but eventually settled in Brookhaven, LI in 1665. Having been closely associated with Oliver Cromwell he may have sought obscurity, and/or he may have preferred to be in a less developed place where his work would have more of a missionary flavor.
