Obituary: Jesse Washington was born in Quincy, Florida on May 17, 1919, the son of Jesse and Amanda Daniels Washington. The family moved to New Jersey and he received his education in the Kearny school system, then attended New York University and studied also at Fairleigh Dickinson and Rutgers Universities. Mr. Washington was founder of the Rite Way Maintenance Service, in Kearny, New Jersey. He served as Housekeeping consultant for the Hoffman La Roche Training Center in Montclair. In 1970 he became Executive Housekeeper for the College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark (formerly Martland Hospital) and continued there for nine years. During this current year he became Executive Housekeeper for the Francis Xavier Home and Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Jesse Washington was active in many civic and service organizations including the N.A.A.C.P., the Urban League of Essex County (where he formerly served on the Board of Directors), the Auxiliary of Martland Hosptial. He was President of the College of Medicine and Dentistry Credit Union, President of the High Park Gardens Community Association and Director of the High Park Gardens Cooperative Corporation. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Department of Continuing Education of Montclair State College, as well as other committees and associations too numerous to mention. He was a long-time memebr of the Thirteenth Avenue Presbyterian Church, and when that congregation merged with Clinton Avenue Presbyterian, became a member there. He was an ardent church worker, serving tirelessly in many capacities. On December 6, 1970 he joined Munn Avenue Church by letter of transfer from Clinton Avenue Church. Already an ordained Elder, he served on the Session and became President of the Board of Trustees. At the time of his death he was Vice President of the Session, and on the evening he was stricken he was on his way to a meeting of that body. Taken to East Orange General Hospital, he died there on Tuesday night, June 19. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters, Doreen Abernathy of South Orange and Marilyn Washington of Plainfield, his father Jesse Washington, Sr.; five sisters, Hazel Bryant, Georgia Dean, Louise Neal, Barbara Stroud and Doreen Stevens; two brothers, Booker and Louis; eight grandchidren and a host of relatives and friends.6 | |||||||||||||||||||
